Unless you book yourself on some outliers like the expedition ship to low occupancy river-cruise in Europe or to the Galapagos, you will end up boarding the large mass market ships which may not render a great cruise experience. You will have the same experience had by other travellers such as rushing to the port, getting on the ship, going crazy with 3500 new best friends and getting off. Although there is nothing wrong with that, you also want to get the most out of the cruise. And there are several ways to put a little zip in your cruise such as:
Always get there the night before
This may sound simple but the truth is many cruisers literally miss the boat each year and this is because of the delayed traffic, flights, bad weather and other troubles. Others board the boat by the skin of their teeth, screaming at one another and even panting. You don’t want all these stress; drive or fly into your port city the night before and extend the fun. You will bypass the pre-departure troubles and add a fun day to your vacation. Just check with a travel agency for information such as the stay and cruise information. Some companies will even include parking and shuttles to your ship, free of charge.
Say “Bon Voyage” in style
Nothing is known to kick start a cruise better than some spurge. And most cruise lines will not have a problem with this – plus you will look like a hero to your better half. Other lines offer gift packages when you check in. They can give anything from champagne and balloon packages to long stemmed roses to give your cabin some floral panache.
Eat on your terms
Many cruise lines encourage group dining at some prescribed times. If you like making small talks with same strangers at night then go for it. If your cruise happens to dock a bit late, you may want to slip off and have something for dinner; something native will suffice. You can also order a room service breakfast and have a picnic on the balcony. If budget allows it, you can even make reservations at some extra fee specialty restaurant which feature whimsical presentation and menus on iPads just to have a great experience.
Stay away from the pool
At full capacity, a cruise can hold up to 6300 passengers and many of them will have their eyes set on the vessel’s pools. And other cruises will only have a fraction of the chairs, thus can only accommodate those who are lucky. You want to duck the hubbub by going for vessels with options such as adults-only areas, pools, and also less crowded. You can also scope out some of the ship deck plans for a place you can call your own. Some vessels have multiple levels of alfresco seating available and because they are set too far from the pools, many will be unused.
Stay on the ship
There is this ugly reality about port calls; you barely see the place you are visiting. And of course you are paying high prices for the privilege if you book an excursion. If you cannot stand spending six hours crammed on that tour bus, then stay onboard. And most facilities are open for you; you can hit the water flume on the Disney Magic, catch the planetarium show, read a book and enjoy other facilities on board. For eight hours, of course it is your ship.
Go to the disco
Dancing the night away may not be your thing, but look at it; when did you last play bingo or ate at a buffet? It is time to shake up a little. You should note that unless there is some event such as a deck party most cruise ships start to quiet down by midnight. You want to meet some interesting characters on the floors and super charge your holiday in the ship’s disco. Chances are high that you will either return the next night or look at you pictures the next morning and want to hide the rest the of the day. And this is part of the fun remember!
Get a spa pass
When it comes to at sea-spa these days, there is lots of competition. But you don’t want to splurge with an overpriced massage in order to bubble and soak. Ask the spa’s front desk for something that will suit your budget. Most lines will let you use their facilities such as steam rooms, heated tiled loungers and thalassotherapy pools for less.
